Born in 1927 in Kenora, Ontario, George Sawchuk spent the first 40 years of his life as a logger and labourer before an accident claimed his leg, forcing him to retire. Living in North Vancouver at the time, he came to occupy himself in the woods behind his house making carvings that he would set on stumps. His artwork drew the attention of artists and critics like Lucy Lippard, who included him in a number of important exhibitions in the early 1970's.
