Gerald Hushlak, Spirit of the Clearcut, 2010. Digital Drawing

August 5 Opening Night
Artists’ Talks with Gerald Hushlak & Reva Stone – 7:30PM
After Party – 8:30PM

Gerald Hushlak, a professor in the Fine Arts Faculty at the University of Calgary, conflates art and cutting edge technology to produce artwork that is as remarkable to look at as it is provocative. In 1974, Hushlak won the World Print Competition hosted jointly by the Smithsonian Institute and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for a computer generated print. Since then he has maintained a diverse practice incorporating painting, sculpture, installation work and a deep and abiding interest in a range of computer-assisted techniques. This exhibition focuses on a series of digital prints that stem from a process he has developed wherein two images are virtually bred together. Using a computer based algorithm, successive generations of offspring are produced and bred again. At different stages in their evolution, images are sampled and produced as digital prints. Subjects range from images of bicycles and clearcuts to the Venice Biennale.
