Free Reception & Artist’s Talk – September 13 7:30 pm. All are welcome. John Hall taught in the visual arts program at the University of Calgary for 27 years and was appointed Professor Emeritus. He has retired and currently lives in the Okanagan. Hall is known for his photo-realist paintings of still lifes that often incorporate the popular, the playful and the kitsch.
Stuffed animals, plastic Mounties, Olympic souvenirs and lollipops are among the objects that frequently populate his paintings. They engage immediately, drawing the attention of the viewer with a sense of play and nostalgia. Ultimately, however many of the objects in Hall’s paintings lack any great significance and the pleasure of ones initial encounter with them is soon over-taken by a sense of their superficiality and a critique of the culture from which they emerged. ![]() John Hall, Cielo Vespertino, 1993. acrylic on canvas July 6 — September 16
