May 22 to August 9

Coast Salish artist Leslie Sam, known as lessLIE, explores "traditional” Coast Salish imagery and the politics of iconography as it has evolved from a culturally specific context of mark making. Investigating, in his practice, dynamic issues stemming from colonialism (appropriation and assimilation), he tackles a range of contemporary issues through paintings, prints and installation work that speak to Coast Salish history and contribute to critical discourse around the history of First Nations peoples. lessLIE recently participated in the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s exhibition Transporters which examined Contemporary Salish art. Using text, and iconography derived from his Coast Salish heritage he re-examines meaning, form and history.
